COVID-19 has been rough to say the least, and has hit the restaurant industry especially hard. Many managers have had to let employees go, and those employees have already found other jobs. But this pandemic will end, and when it does there will be a flood of hiring going on in the industry. Are you prepared? On this episode of “Give an Ovation”, Ovation CEO Zack Oates chatted with HigherMe’s Founder and CEO Derek Williamson about 5 Tips on how to hire once we can all go back to work:

1. Get ready for “The greatest game of musical chairs that anyone has ever seen”

There’s not going to be enough talent to go around. Everyone will be in a hiring frenzy, so you need to do what you can to set yourself apart.

2. Prepare now

Things are never going to be exactly how they were. When restaurants can open dine-in again, customers are still going to be wary of social distancing, sanitation, and delivery options. Prepare training materials, adjust your operations, and get ready for doing more on the job training than usual, because to capture employees you will need to streamline your interviewing process.

3. Start hiring now

To stand out of the crowd you need to start the process right away. You can offer contingency positions where employees are offered a job once COVID-19 ends, or temp positions.

4. Look beyond the job-boards

While good talent can be found on websites like indeed (such as the intern writing this blog post *wink wink*), online job-boards will be extremely saturated and overflowing with job postings. Derek recommends finding talent through your customer base and community.

5. Try virtual hiring

Virtual interviews are where it’s at right now. If you don’t have it set up yet, it’s time!
